Successful Strategies For Nonprofit Fundraising Events

Our President and CEO, Christina Taylor Serrano, was recently invited by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) to speak on a panel about successful strategies for nonprofit fundraising events. She addressed best practices of event fundraising, such as how to go from an event to a stronger relationship driven approach with your donors. Sitting on the panel alongside Christina was Michelle Powers Keegan of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Danielle Altenburg of the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.

Events are oftentimes a fundraising staple for many nonprofits that serve as a significant source of annual revenue. Each panelist spoke about their own unique personal and professional experience  through a lively discussion moderated by Barbara O’Reilly of Windmill Hill Consulting.

Here are some highlights from Christina:

  • Determine the kind of event that is most appropriate for your organization. The event not only needs to draw attendees — a successful fundraising event will also connect to your organization’s mission in some way.
  • The more your donors and volunteers resonate with an organization’s mission, the more inclined they are to support it (both at an annual fundraiser and year round).
  • Outsource! Outside consultants are experts in their fields, and have the background and knowledge necessary to make your fundraising event the best it can be.

The morning concluded with an interactive Q&A session from the audience. AFP Members and guests asked questions on topics from how to work with VIPS to ways to increase event turnout. It truly was an educational and inspirational day for all. TME was proud to be part of it.
